Center console refurb

The center console on my 91 850i had become sticky with a thick tar like film on it. It become very unsightly as it nicked and marred with the slightest touch. The fill plates and shift plate also suffered with the same sticky finish which I believe is some sort of coating BMW put on these plastic pieces along with the effects of age (all my pieces appear original).

I understand that new consoles are available for ~ $75 but I've also read the old plates do not fit the new consoles very well.

I decided to try cleaning it up and after several hours armed with hand cleaner (with pumice), scrapers and a toothbrush, I was able to remove all of the sticky finish. The most effective scraper I found were my finger nails which are now completely worn down! Carb cleaner makes quicker work of removing this tar like finish but I did not want to risk damaging the plastic.

I finished it up with a few applications of back to black and it looks great!

On a related note, when I removed the console I found a sheet of plastic hanging behind it. Is this normal? Any ideas what it is there for?
