Convertible release handle

I purchased a vert recently where the soft top release handle housing is broken/missing.The handle is there and with a bit of manipulation the cover can be released. I tried taking the back housing off a parts car but could not see if the backing plastic housing that is bolted to the body can be removed without first removing the actual handle? If this is the case do the cable ends need to released at the latches and pulled into the car through the housing before the handle/housing can be removed?
