Flat Black Panel Between Tail Lights- Yes or No?

Greetings Sixers,

The time to repaint is at hand. My 87 635csi, Luxor beige has the flat black panel between the rear light clusters and I was wondering;

Do we find this attractive?

I see many sixes without the black panel perhaps having been repainted and it was easier to cover with the body color.

Is this an OEM thing if so why was it done in the first place - European plates background- make them more visible?

Should I repaint the black panel or not?
