Fuel gauge help...?

I apologise in advance if I have posted this in the wrong place, new to the forum.

Anyway.. I recently purchased a 1996 328i and after filling the tank I noticed the fuel gauge only went to half full, after about 20 mins of driving the red light was on and gauge was showing beyond empty.
Then my range on the computer went from 250+ miles to 0 in the space of 10 actual miles covered. I figured this was because the gauge was not getting a reading.
I have tried removing the fuses for intrument cluster and then re-inserting them to no avail. Also tried the cluster test (hold mile reset, turn ignition on, let it run tests) and all the gauges exept the fuel one move.
So I am unsure if this means the actual gauge is broken? Or if it is the fuel senders?
I took the rear seat up and checked the connections on both senders.. I read somewhere that your able to 'short' out the connections and the gauge should come to life? But I am unsure how to so this safely..?
Are there any further checks I can do with the senders / pump?
Failing a 'quick fix' does does anyone know the part numbers for the senders ect? OR can anyone tell me if any e36 units will fit and work the same or do they NEED to be 328 units?

Thank you for any help and advice :)
