Hi guys and girls, my first post (sorry for being such a long one) on here after buying a 1998 E39 523. I am pretty familiar with E36/E46's but this is my first E39.
It starts and drives fine probably 3 times out of 5. The airbag light is on, so is DSC/ABS but that is all.
The first morning after buying the car, it unlocked from the key as normal, interior lights came on and dials lit up at ignition position 1 and 2 but as soon as I tried to start it all power died instantly, interior lights, central locking, everything. Put a newly charged battery on and it started fine, left overnight and started and drove fine the next morning. A few hours later I went to start it, electrics and dials all come on as normal but again as soon as I tried to turn her over the electrics just died. I unplugged the battery left it 5 minutes, plugged it back on and it started up.
So far I have I unplugged fuse 75 + 76 for the FSU and heater blower controls, as the heater fans are weak I wondered if this was draining the battery, even with both fuses out I still get the same problem.
I check the Voltage on OBC every time before I start it and it's always at 12.1v no matter how long it's left. When it is up and running the voltage increases and stays around 13.9v so alternator seems ok.
I have checked sleep mode by leaving boot open and it does go to sleep fine.
I've tried 2 different batteries and they both do the same thing. When the power cuts, I can disconnect the battery and reconnect it and all is ok until next time it happens.
Has anyone had similar issues or got any ideas? I am wondering if it could be the starter motor shorting, or another short somewhere but if that was the case I'd expect this to happen every time?
Many thanks for any help :)
