I don't know if everyone is settled on this or not by now, but when I went looking for solutions to my cruise control not working after purchasing this 2002 E39 530i, one of the items raised was a MAF not working. It seemed to raise some controversy as to what could a MAF have to do with the CC. (Which personally I agreed with at the time - couldn't see how or why there would be a connection).
My cruise control green icon indicatoir would turn on after the engine was started, but instantly extinguish the moment the car was pulled into gear (auto).
However, when doing a check with Carsoft over the various modules, I did see that the MAF was throwing up an error that it couldn't read the temperature. I checked the voltage at the plug as suggested and it was okay, so it was the MAF at fault. I cleared the error but it kept coming back.
Car was driving really well so haven't hurried about fixing it. Perhaps slightly higher fuel consumption on short trips as the ECU was following a map instead.
So last week I finally purchased a new VDO MAF and on the weekend swapped it in.
Viola - the Cruise Control is working.
So for me its conclusive and I thought for anyone else searching now or in the future for a solution to their CC not working, its worthwhile including the MAF in their investigations.
