1997 318iS Coupe: 200,000 kilometres
Had an extensive leak at timing case oil seal.
Removed old seal and have new BMW seal.
The harmonic balancer was scored and it was recommended that I fit a "Speedi" sleeve.
The sleeve supplied by my local bearing company had a collar that was used to push it on and the information advised that after sleeve installation this was to be removed using side cutting pliers or similar.
I got the sleeve on and then tried removing the collar and found it hard to get at and when I did get it to peel away it was quite difficult and slightly damaged the inner edge of the sleeve by raising the edge as it peeled away.
That would be OK if the new seal ran on the principally good surface but as there is no shoulder when the seal is pushed into the timing case the seal may end up running on the inner and slightly damaged edge of the Speedi Sleeve.
The sleeve is only 3/8" or 10 millimetre in width and with no positive location for the seal in timing case there is no guarantee that the new seal will run in the same location on the pulley and this could result in tearing up the new seal.
Right now I am leaning towards replacing the crank pulley/vibration damper.
Can anyone tell me an exact fitting of the seal to the timing case?
All comments gratefully received.
