Hi guys I've got some questions for anyone that's done the E46 M3 SMG transmission repair. Or knows them fairly well.
I've been considering an E46 M3 as a DD for a few years now. I DD my Z3 2.8 now and a Nissan Frontier, but I'd like to at least sell the truck soon and us the Z3 as a track rat. Now originally I looked into the E46 M3 and considered purchasing a manual transmission car only. But now I have two manual cars, a 2.8 Z3, and an S54 M Coupe, I was kinda thinking about the M3 SMG due to its lower cost to purchase (usually $2500-3500). I realize this is because manual demands a premium over paddle shift, and because of the sheer reliability and ease of maintenance with a manual.
Now that being said, I haven't driven an E46 M3 with an SMG transmission (I will soon). I have read about the repair of the SMG pump and it looks like its about a $2000 part. More money if you replace other things "while you're in there". But other then that, and expecting the pump to fail at some point, are the SMG E46 M3's too terrible (plus my girlfriend doesn't drive stick)? I already have an S54 car and don't find it too hard to repair. Plus I have timing tools for it and valve shims ect. for the S54 (rod bearings).
Anyway is the E46 SMG that bad if I can do the repairs myself, or is the manual the bees knees like I originally thought? Thanks for any replies.
