Good day everyone,
I have a pretty common problem with my E46. I'm having some serious loss of power, especially below 2000RPM. Onwards, above 2000RPM, it accelerates better but not as good as it's ever been.
Sometimes (happens very rarely) when accelerating, it feels like the car accelerates normally. No hesitation or whatsoever. It happened to me yesterday and I felt like woah why doesn't it ever accelerate this fast? And that's why I'm currently writing this post.
Reading the web I stumbled upon the VANOS seals or the MAF sensor. My car has driven 172.000 kilometers without these things ever being replaced or cleaned.
Now as my engine is a N46, it looks slightly different from the other models I've seen on the web. It has two VANOS solenoids as shown on the picture below:

When I browse the web for DIY VANOS repair guides, I always end up finding things like this:

1. What's the difference between these things?
2. Do I have both of them?
3. In case I have both, which one will most likely be the culprit?
I'm a total noob when it comes to cars. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yeah, I think I'm also having a slight oil leak. Haven't been able to identify where it comes from though. I'm guessing it's the valve cover gasket. I sometimes smell burned oil coming through the vents when standing still.
Thanks in advance,
Niko

E46 316ti 4 cylinder (N46) loss of power
I had similar issues with my wife’s E46/N46 I ran through a number of mtc/PM items, but the fix seemed to be 1) clean the vanos solenoids with brake cleaner 10 minute job, made a huge difference and cost nothing.
RépondreSupprimer2) replaced the cam position sensors
These two items made a world of difference.
As for your oil leak, the camshaft cover gasket and vacuum pump are common issues you will see wet oil on the heat shield above the exhaust manifold - that drips onto the exhaust hence the smell
