Well, I did the entire timing chain guide replacement and VANOS rebuild on my motor.
Not long after, a knocking sound developed and I've determined that its a bad rod bearing.
Has anyone gone through this repair before? It picked up a motor hoist from a friend and intend to pull the motor tomorrow.
The repair seems straightforward, but I can't find much information about people having undertaken this before. Do most just find another used engine? I wouldn't want to just install an engine that might be close to failure.
To repair, its looking like:
Pull engine
Tear down and do a little forensics
Remove crank and take it to a crank shop for a grind and polish.
Source a new bearing set plus an oversize bearing for the refinished journal
Reassemble and reinstall
Anything else? Looks like I'll be replacing the oil pan gasket, rear main seal, and retiming the motor (again).
One more thing.. do I need to remove the offending rod? I would like to avoid pulling the heads.
What would you do?
