Need insight from BMW drivers

So I bought a used BMW 1994 740il with 162000 miles for about 700 dollars yesterday. Long story short, I need insight from the well rounded people here on whether or not this BMW is worth the struggle of repairing. The BMW immediately turned off when I braked a bit hard but upon closer inspection, the BMW ran out of gasoline and had to fill the tank up to bring it to life once more. Upon leaving the gasoline station, I drove about two miles before the car emitted smoke from my dashboard and air conditioning vents. I popped the hood of the car and lifted a lid next to the fuse box in front of the driver's side and found a compartment to be emitting smoke from it with a living passion. Now I am no expert but what may be the issuse that caused this vapor issue in this particular region of the car? Now on to otber parts, everytime I turn on the vehicle, I get a coolant level and trans program notification in the dashboard. I know BMW's are highly tuned machinws that detect the slightest error but when one gets errors such as these? Is it time to finally hang up the ropes for the vehicle and consider it done for or is there still hope for thos 740il? Any insight would be appreciated.
