So I go to replace the starter on my '01 540i today and ran into a few problems. First off I realized I needed more room under the car to work as I'm a bigger guy with some long arms. I already had the battery unhooked and after I took it down from the Jack stands and reattached the battery cable it wouldn't crank or start. So I'm thinking EWS after reading a few threads here, but want to rule out the starter being 100% dead before I go with that worst case scenario. I pop the hood to find use the 20pin connector to jump a couple of terminals and do the remote starter test and well...it's not there. I have no clue how I was able to miss this for so long, but it's just not there. It's supposed to be on the passenger side fender well area between the abs module and washer fluid reservoir, but it's not. Popped the cover off the dme housing and there's no wiring for it either. After 30 minutes of crawling all over the engine bay and tracing wires I embarrassed myself by exclaiming "wtf Batman?!" quite loudly not realizing my neighbors were all outside. So now I have them looking at me all weird like as I stand here typing this on my phone and scratching me head trying to figure this out. Has anyone ever encountered this? The PO did an engine swap, but I don't even see provisions in the harness boots for the 20 pin connector like my spare M62's harnesses have. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
No crank, No start, and no 20pin connector!?
