Speedometer error recalibration

Hopefully I'm not gonna be "that guy" rehashing an old and often-covered debate with this, but through Google I've found conflicting information.

I have BMW Scanner v1.4.0 and was going through, recoding features yesterday to set the car (2003 540iA MSport) up the way I want it. I came across this setting yesterday:

Is this the error factor that causes the speedometer to read high and not agree with the speed on my onboard computer? If so, I'm assuming that changing it to a zero would set the speedometer to read true road speed. If it isn't, can someone enlighten me as to what it is? I'm talking about the standard inaccuracy that the car seems to have as I'm on OEM MPars and stock MSport tires as the car came with.

What I found searching online was some people saying the calibration would have to be done by a dealer, others saying it can't be done, and still others saying a dealer can't do it with their standard equipment but that some specialized software can do it. There was even talk that if the speed error was changed, that it would default back to the error after an ignition cycle, so that to have the error removed, I would have to recalibrate through the PASoft scan software every time I start the car.

Has anyone definitively come across the solution for this? I know I could just change that default value and try it, but being my first foray into BMW adaptive software, I'm a little hesitant to mess with things I'm not positive about. Thank you in advance.
