You guys know your engines. I just got done a few weeks swapping an m52 into my 318i. All new gaskets and hoses, running m50 manifold with no kit. Running a mishimoto intake elbow with 2 inputs, 1 for my idle control valve set up like the m50 set up, and the other for s62 cyclone separator.
I was having a really weird issue with high idle and severe rev hang. I checked all vacuum connections, and put in all new vacuum hoses. No leaks in the system. I unplug the maf and nothing changes, I replace it, no change. Changed the tps, same thing. So I unplug the icv and it ran a lot better, revs didn't hang but idled at 1100 rpm.
Unplugged the maf and it stalled so I know the maf is registering now. I bought a new icv and put it in, the idle is now at 2000 rpm and rev hangs just as bad, so I wiggled and tapped on the icv and the idles dropped to 1100 rpm but the revs still hang but drop 50 percent faster.
Here's the weirdest part. I disconnect it and it runs like garbage, so I clean the connections and unplug the battery for 30 minutes. Out everything back together and start it, the idle surges from 1100 to 2100 rpm non stop. So I put a 1/4" drive 11mm socket in the little 45 degree angle plastic connector on the intake side of the icv hose and unplugged the icv. The car idles at 750 and revs perfectly fine and drives stronger than before.
What am I missing here? New oem coils (expensive) newly rebuilt, flow matched injectors, several mafs, several tps, several icv, pulled apart many times, fuel pressure is spot on. New plugs multiple times, different brands. Only thing that worked was the socket trick. I would leave it that way and be happy forever if I knew the engine wasn't running lean or rich. Something isn't right if it runs great rigged like that.
I'm going to scan for codes tonight and see what I get. Any input? I'm stumped
