Timing in an M52 (e36): correct position for the primary exhaust sprocket?

Pelican's instructions for cam timing say that the primary sprocket should initially be remounted so the cam flange holes are biased to the left of the sprocket slots: http://ift.tt/1U0lVpb (see Figure 3).
That's when the primary chain is *untensioned*. When it's tensioned, I assume the sprocket rotates a bit CCW which centers the mount holes in the slots. The Dr. Vanos Stage 2 instructions actually show the tensioned orientation (http://ift.tt/1Ie7jd2 page 10).

In my case, the mount holes are biased to the right of the slots under chain tension..yet I never removed the sprocket. I *could* realign the sprocket and cam flange simply by popping off the primary chain and rotating the sprocket a tooth or two. But why would I need to do that if I didn't remove the sprocket to begin with? The cams and flywheel are locked with the special BMW tools, so they can't be adjusted independently. Does this mean the engine timing has been wrong?
