I have been chasing around some lousy power steering performance recently.
Rack is new, reservoir is new, fluid is new but it still feels like I'm not getting much assistance.
I have spun the pump by hand and there is resistance in one direction, spins freely in the other and the shaft is firm.
When hand spinning in the resisting direction thing pressure hose moans/vibrates a bit, not sure if this is good or an indication of something.
The pump does not make any whining sounds on its own while idling, it has ~180k on it and is original to the car.
Any who, a common check seems to be to take of the reservoir cap while running and see if the fluid is moving.
Problem is I can't tell if mine is moving by the pump or if it is just vibrating with the engine. I do not see obvious recirculation in the reservoir.
I would love a video of a know working power steering system to compare to. Just a video with the car on looking at the reservoir with the cap off.
Appreciate any other insight anyone might have as well.
This could honestly all be in my head, and if I go ahead and swap out the PS pump and it doesn't change, I will feel like a boob.
Then again its likely time to replace this thing anyways for maintenance sake.
