Hello, fellow 3 series and BMW owners!
I have a 2004 BMW E46 318i. It has 57,000 KM as of date.
My problem is that when starting out in "D", the car starts out in 1st gear instead of 2nd gear. This started happening recently only at around 55K mileage. I just want to state first that it is normal for the car to start out in 2nd when in "D".
On top of that, when the problem above began, I also noticed that the car shifts LATER than usual. It shifts at a higher RPM than usual. Almost as if it was in a PERPETUAL "SPORT" MODE when in fact I am only using "D". Shifts also became sluggish. It used to be sharp when it shifts.
Even more frustrating is that the car downshifts earlier than normal. Sometimes, even randomly, when going down a flyover, it downshifts exaggeratedly and the RPM goes as high 3,500 RPM! I know it is normal for the computer to downshift when going down a slope, but this is way too much.
As a result I get the feeling of "inertia / holding back" all the time and I have to step on the gas a bit more so that it will shift (it doesn't roll freely and smoothly unless I MANUALLY upshift the car using the steptronic transmission).
Any thoughts would be highly appreciated and any recommended shops will be noted.
Thank you!
