E30 Convertible question

Hi I just picked up a clean '87 convertible. However, I cannot get the top stowage hatch to pop each and every time. It's a manual top with the handle behind the driver side to release the hatch cover. The handle, which is the same as a door handle was broken when I got the car so I thought that was the reason for the hatch ONLY releasing on the PASSENGER SIDE. Sometimes the driver side hatch will pop but not all the time. I replaced the handle and still the same results. Possible thoughts are the cable is stretched? Anyway I cannot get the DRIVER SIDE to release.

Anyone out there that can help me out? Anyone have/had this issue?
