I replaced both lower and upper control arms on my son's '92 525 five speed about a year ago. Meyle HD were used. All went well and 55 mph shimmy was eliminated.
The car sat last winter as he has been using my old '91 325iX for winter commuting. This spring he kept using the iX. I kept asking about the fiver but he shrugged it off.
It turned out that the fiver has a shimmy back and son didn't want to bother fixing it. First thing discovered was that tires had 25psi pressure or less. Pumped 'em up to 32psi and things improved considerably. However, there is a shimmy that starts around 75mph and continues to 85mph. I wasn't curious enough to try to find out if the shimmy cleared up at higher speeds.
Both upper and lower control arms don't budge when yanked on. When installed, the upper control arm bushing bolts were tightened with car on ramps and son in driver's seat.
There is no notable vibration from 0-75.
A bit of googling on e34 shimmy revealed thoughts that 55mph shimmy is likely control arms, but high speed shimmy is likely tire balance or drive shaft. Current summer tires are directional so a front to back swap might verify if shimmy is a tire/wheel issue.
Questions:
1. Is it reasonable to rule out control arms causing 75mph shimmy?
2. Is there an e34 DIY drive shaft check?
Thanks much,
