I've got my 1996 328i locked at TDC, the special cam-locking blocks are installed, and the secondary chain tensioner pin is giving me some slack in the chain. So far so good.
So I take the special sprocket wrench and try to turn the exhaust sprocket clockwise while wiggling off the Vanos. And it will barely move--about 5 degrees, then it's clearly trying to rotate both cams with it. That is NOT supposed to happen: the intake sprocket should move with the chain about 20 degrees independently of the cam.
The Vanos itself is not seized to the engine. I can pull it away a bit but that's just moving the piston out. The Vanos splined cup is still firmly attached to the cam splined shaft.
How do I get the Vanos off if the sprockets are trying to turn the (locked) cams?
Pelican notes that wear on some pieces of the intake sprocket can make it difficult to turn once the Vanos has been reinstalled. And obviously those parts should be replaced. But I can't even get my Vanos off. I even tried loosening the 3 nuts on the front intake plate but the exhaust sprocket is still difficult to turn in ANY direction.
Please help...
