I've been obsessing over the idea of buying an s52 m coupe for a few months now. I have the funds available but I'm really not interested in spending more than $20k. I originally went down this rabbit hole by looking at buying an e36 m3 on the cheap. I simply want a car to hoon in, and do some track and autocross events until my 1973 911 track car is ready next year (mega build for a track monster). I would still keep the new purchase around as a good canyon carver and fun haver.
My dilema: Everyone speaks of the less than idea behavior of an m coupe at the limit from trailing arms, wheel base, etc etc. I'm not particularly afraid of the car having owned a built e30, a z4mc, a built 997tt and a few others between. I'm looking for the advice of owners. Is my love the styling of the m coupe going to leave me disappointed that I didn't spend about $10k on a sorted m3 instead of the m coupe at twice the price? Coilovers would be a given for either car, as would a few mods.
I know now this is covered elsewhere but I have done my reading and am still undecided. Also, I've driven both but it's hard to allow an owner to let you push their car too hard on public roads.
Thanks so much for the help.
